VarietiesAbounding in variety, the Geelong Wine Region is renowned for its superior Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz. Whilst these varieties are the backbone of most winemakers, the Geelong Wine Region is rich in adventurous winemakers. Plantings of Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Merlot and more exotics such as Primitivo, Gamay, Langrein and Carmenere are becoming more predominant across the sub regions. Recent summers have produced lovely Rosés. Look out for a smattering of Sparkling Wines and Dessert Wines at cellar doors throughout the Geelong Wine Region. WHITE: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling RED: Pinot Noir, Shiraz Famous for its quality in the 19th century, the Geelong Wine Region's Pinot Noir has led the renaissance producing world class Pinot Noir across all three sub regions. The style, varying dramatically across the diverse terroir of the vineyards maintains a common varietal base that is unmistakably Geelong Wine. The maritime-climate similar to that of Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, experiences long, languid ripening summer sunshine. The cool nights and typically dry autumns equal optimum ripeness for both Chardonnay and Pinot, producing full and fruity wine exhibiting some Burgundian overtones. The Geelong Wine Region's Shiraz displays great strength and depth of colour, bouquet and flavour that defines the Region. The Shiraz grape thrives in all the diverse and adverse growing conditions across all three sub regions, making it the most recognisable of the varieties to represent the Geelong Wine Region. |
