2009 Geelong Wine Show culminates in commendation and international comparison
The culmination of the 2009 Geelong Wine Show (GWS) has seen the event – and Geelong wine - catapulted into the international arena with clear indication that this region’s wine is going from strength to strength. GWS Judging Panel Chair, Huon Hooke - Australia’s leading wine judge and industry commentator - has commended the exceptional standard of entries submitted for this region’s prestigious wine competition. Speaking at the 11th annual Geelong Wine Show Awards dinner, held at Deakin Management Centre on Friday 16 October, Mr Hooke said it was a stronger show than 2008. “Last year was good but this year was even better!” Mr Hooke said. The Geelong Wine Show 2009 saw more than 200 local wines competing head-to-head. All wines submitted had to be crafted from Geelong grown fruit. With judging criteria matching stringent international standards, Mr Hooke’s discussion of statistical analysis clearly reinforced the fact that Geelong wine stands tall against the best in Australia and the world. The medal tally included 9 Gold, 20 Silver and 47 Bronze - a total of 76 medals. “Of the three major varietal classes (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz), 52 per cent of the chardonnay class received medals - an incredibly high statistic in any wine show,” he said. “Similarly, in the Pinot Noir class, 47% received medals – a very good result, well above average.” “The Shiraz class had the largest number of entries of which 40% received medals – a pretty good result and about average compared to around the country – the wines are elegant, balanced and very good drinking wines.” Mr Hooke went on to say that of the three top wines tasted in these three varietal entries competing for the Best Wine of the Show trophy, they were all from the vintage 2008 - now released for wine lovers to source and enjoy. “Perhaps that is telling us something about the deliciousness of these wines from the ’08 vintage.” According to Mr Hooke, an outstanding variety was also Pinot Gris, the intriguing and relatively new grape varietal that has gained serious momentum in the last few years. “Perhaps this is a variety whose time is really about to come,” he said.
